Maraş - Narlıova 2nd Phrase Irrigation Project
The construction of the Maraş-Narlıova 2nd phase irrigation project is accomplished between 1968 -1971. This project includes the construction of 310.336 m channel, 1.000 m tunnel, 850 m inclined drop, 600 m gallery, 348 m viaduct, 100 m siphon and the construction of 1.118 ea. canal structures. The main phases and the corresponding lengths of construction of 310.336 m channel construction is given below.
The construction of the irrigation project of Maraş Narlıova is accomplished under quite difficult circumstances, because the country is quite steep and mountainous and also the large portion of the area was swamp (historical Mizmilli swamp).

The river had been taken to a conduit and after construction, penstock had been placed to the same conduit. 28.000 m3 rock excavation had been done for the construction of spillway. The main body of dam consists of 1.400.000 m3 earth fill.
Cross-section and general situation of the dam is given which consist of various layers. In the cross-section, impervious clay core, semi-impervious layers at both sides of core, followed by pervious shells, stability fill, filter fill and filling for losses can be observed with different colours. On the general layout plan, one can see the places of dam, penstock, irrigation pipes, reservoir and spillway.
Tercan Dam
The scope of construction of dam mainly consists of 2.400.000 m3 filling of various layers, 50.000 m3 concrete which is used for the spillway, power plant building, intake structure and shaft. Also it includes the manufacturing of penstock, valves, gates and trashracks which mean 1.000 tons of manufacturing.
Because of the existence of pervious alluvial around the core of dam, it was difficult to prevent the water seepage to the 24 m deep dam base, in order to place a clay core. It is being very difficult to overcome the seepage of 600 m3/sec water by pumps, as a measure an injection curtain was formed in the alluvium on upstream side. This way the seepage of water was reduced to 250 m3/sec.

According to the latest investigations, the brown coal deposits in the AFŞİN-ELBİSTAN area amount to a total of 3.2 billion tons. Thanks to new technologies it will be possible to economically mine 1.8 billon tons in open cast mining operations. The overall deposit spreads out over an area of 120 km2. There are three brown coal deposits suitable for mining within this region. The first of these three deposits is Kışlaköy. Kışlaköy currently supplies the AFŞİN-ELBİSTAN power plant delivering an output of 4 x 344 MW. The total deposits of the Kışlaköy area contain 600 million tons of brown coal suitable for mining.
The brown coal of all three deposit areas will yield a combined thermal value of approximately 1.100 kcal/kg. These deposits contain 44% ash and 56% moisture.
The plant is designed to use low calorie brown coal continuously and safely producing electrical energy without using natural gas or fuel-oil. As an integrated plant with 4 units, the power station and the coal mine will be operated at full output. During peak operations it will be possible to mine an annual 30 million tons of coal and transport approximately 75 million m3 of ash material to the slag heaps.
